Federal Recognition
Tribal group joins fight over Gilroy development

Another tribal group is seeking large-scale development near Gilroy, California.

A splinter group of Amah Mutsun Indians wants federal recognition in order to develop 3,500 acres of the Sargent Ranch. The group plans housing, businesses and a cultural center.

The group broke off from the Amah Mutsun Band of Ohlone Indians, which is also seeking federal recognition. The Amah Mutson Band said the Sargent Ranch is a sacred area and to develop it would be "sacrilegious."

The Amah Mutsuns are also opposed to attempts by the five-member California Valley Miwok Tribe to develop near Gilroy. The Amah Mutsons say the Miwoks don't have a traditional claim to the area.
