Nebraska tribes fail to turn in recall petition

A recall effort initiated by two Nebraska tribes was stalled on Monday when the Omaha Tribe failed to submit a petition on time.

The Winnebago Tribe and the Omaha Tribe circulated the petition to recall Thurston County attorney Al Maul. The tribes say he is hostile to their interests in a county that is 52 percent Native American.

According to The Sioux City Journal, the Omaha Tribe was responsible for taking the petition to the county courthouse but a tribal spokesperson got there "a minute or two" after 5 p.m. The courthouse had already closed.

A separate petition to recall county sheriff Chuck Obermeyer was abandoned because the Omaha Tribe didn't get enough signatures.
