Two tribes in Nebraska raising political awareness
Wednesday, March 10, 2004
Two tribes in Nebraska have launched a campaign to get more tribal members involved in local, state and national elections, The Sioux City Journal reports. The Winnebago Tribe and the Omaha Tribe plan to register hundreds of tribal members. So far, the Omaha Tribe has registered 100 new voters, said chairman Donald Grant. The tribes are taking particular interest in Thurston County politics. They say local officials are taking anti-Indian actions in a county that is 52 percent Native American. Each tribe has enlisted a tribal member to run for the county commission. Jay R. Stout is a Democrat from the Winnebago reservation and Darren C. Wolfe Sr. is a Republican from the Omaha reservation.
