Bureau of Indian Affairs head Dave Anderson spoke to students at Sherman Indian High School in Riverside, California, on Wednesday.
Anderson spoke of his struggles with school and substance abuse. But he told of his success in becoming sober and urged students "to become the best that we can be," The Riverside Press-Enteprise reported.
Anderson will speak to the Chemawa Indian School in Oregon today.
