California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) is taking his fight against the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians further than the tribe's gaming initiative.
Schwarzenegger traveled to Palm Springs to express opposition to the tribe's development plan for its own land. He said Measure U, which appears only on the local ballot, will allow the tribe to build more casinos.
Schwarzenegger already opposes Proposition 70, the tribe's statewide gaming initiative. Agua Caliente Chairman Richard Milanovich and Palm Springs Mayor Ron Oden criticized the governor for inserting himself in local politics. "The fact that he would try to usurp local policy to address his own ego is beyond belief," Milanovich told The Riverside Press-Enterprise.
The tribe doesn't need local approval to develop its land but is seeking to cooperate with the city of Palm Springs. The tribe wants to develop an area known as Section 14 but doesn't envision new casinos there.
