Members of the White Earth Band of Ojibwe in Minnesota will go to the polls tomorrow to select a new tribal chair.
The election pits a "crook" who serve time in prison for stealing from the tribe against an "evil" rival who graduated from Harvard. That's the way Darrell "Chip" Wadena and Erma Vizenor refer to each other.
Wadena, 65, ran the tribe for two decades before being convicted in 1996. He wants the job again, even though has trouble paying his court-ordered restitution to the tribe on time.
Vizenor, 59, is a long-time rival of Wadena. She says character is a big issue in the election, one fraught with rumors that Wadena is involved in a used-car scheme and that he is under federal investigation.
