Federal Recognition
Virginia tribes press case for federal recognition

Leaders of three Virginia tribes seeking federal recognition said concerns over gaming are bogging down their quest.

The Senate Indian Affairs Committee has approved a bill to recognize six tribes. But the full Senate has yet to act. A related bill in the House is stuck in the House Resources Committee.

The bill would recognize the Chickahominy, the Chickahominy Eastern Division, the Monacan, the Nansemond, the Rappahannock, and the Upper Mattaponi tribes.
