Navajo Code Talker Wilfred Billey spoke to the San Juan Archaeological Society in New Mexico about his experiences in World War II.
Billey spent 30 months in combat during his four years in the military. He became a Code Talker
when one his friends, a Native man from California, died in Saipan. He took over his friend's radio duties.
The original 29 Navajos who developed the unbreakable code received Congressional gold meals. Billey received a Congressional silver medal for his efforts, one of about 400 Navajo soldiers.
