BIA taking comments on Utah Tribe's garbage dump

The Bureau of Indian Affairs is taking public comments through March 29 on a proposed garbage dump on the Skull Valley Goshute Reservation in Utah.

The BIA held two public meetings last October. Last Friday, the BIA began circulating an environmental impact statement for the landfill.

The tribe signed an agreement for the Tekoi Balefill, where up to 62 million tons of garbage would be buried on 500 acres over the next 25 years. The tribe would receive at least $15,000 a month in rent and royalties, according to the company that seeks to store the household waste on the reservation.

More information can be found at http://edocket.access.gpo.gov/2003/03-25320.htm. The EIS can be obtained through BIA or the Environmental Protection Agency.
