Virginia tribes that have been recognized by the state since Colonial times are questioning their involvement in the 2007 commemoration of the settlement of Jamestown.
Some tribal members say they won't participate unless they have federal recognition. They say it is hypocritical for the state and federal government to seek their involvement but not support their bid for status.
Others say the tribes should take part in the events. They believe it will be a unique opportunity to share their story.
A bill to recognize six tribes has been pending in the Senate after approval by the Senate Indian Affairs Committee. Some House Republicans who claim federal recognition will lead to gaming say they will block it.
