A Connecticut lawmaker plans to hold a meeting with key stakeholders to discuss a potential third tribal casino.

Rep. Stephen Dargan (D), co-chairman of the Legislature's Public Safety and Security Committee, wants to meet with the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, the Mohegan Tribe, other lawmakers and representatives of Gov. Dannel P. Malloy (D). If there's consensus, he hopes to draft a bill to authorize the third casino during the next legislative session.

The Mohegans brought up the idea last week to address competition from neighboring Massachusetts. The tribe believes a site near the border would be ideal.

The two tribes operate casinos on their reservations in the southeastern part of the state. They would need land placed in trust to open a new establishment.

The tribes retain exclusive rights to offer Class III games under their compacts. They share 25 percent of slot machines in exchange.
