The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation is interested in pursuing a joint casino with the Mohegan Tribe, The Wall Street Journal reports.

The Mohegans floated the idea last week in response to the threat of competition from neighboring Massachusetts. The Pequots say they are open to a new tribal casino.

“We are certainly open to looking at other opportunities,” Pequot Chairman Rodney Butler told the Journal.

The tribes' reservations are located in the southeastern part of the state. The Mohegans say an ideal spot for the casino would be in an area along a busy highway near the Massachusetts border so the tribes would need land placed in trust there for the project to proceed.

Both tribes have seen gaming revenues suffer since the national economic recession in 2008. The Pequots saw a 5.6 decline in slot machine winnings in October while the Mohegans saw only a very slight drop.
