The New Mexico Legislature's Committee
on Compacts vote 12-4 on Wednesday to advance a Class III gaming compact for the
Navajo Nation.
Last week, the committee asked the tribe to go back to the table and limit the number of new casinos in the agreement. But the tribe refused to budget despite opposition from other tribes and some lawmakers.
“This is a Navajo Nation compact …. This is what we want, and that’s what’s in there,” President Ben Shelly told The Albuquerque Journal.
The tribe operates two Class III facilities in the state. The compact authorizes three more.
