Editorial: Entering a new era with Eastern Cherokee casino deal

"Now that the federal government has approved North Carolina's gambling compact with the Eastern Band of Cherokee, the state is entering a new era.

That means that the General Assembly and the governor taking office in January must act accordingly. What the state has known about state-sanctioned gambling up to this point and how the state has regulated it are obsolete. We need new policies and rules.

The compact will bring new table games to the Cherokee casino, and the tribe is planning to build two new casinos on tribal lands in western counties sometime in the next several years. At the same time, court decisions have repeatedly frustrated legislative attempts to prohibit sweepstakes and video gaming in scores of venues around the state."
