New York communities cut back without tribal gaming revenues

Communities in New York are cutting back on services and eliminating jobs as a revenue sharing dispute between tribes and Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) drags on.

The Seneca Nation has withheld more than $400 million and the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe has withheld an estimated $35 million. The tribes say the state has violated the exclusivity provisions of the Class III gaming compact by allowing non-Indian gaming.

"We're not going to sit by idly while we're being cheated," Seneca President Robert Odawi Porter told the Associated Press.

As a result of the dispute, Niagara Falls is out $60 million and Salamanca is out at least $5 million in Seneca funds. In Mohawk territory, two counties and four towns are out $12 million.
