Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe Class III compact vote put on hold

The Massachusetts Senate delayed a vote on a Class III gaming compact for the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe.

Sen. Mark Montigny (D) put a hold on the compact, according to news reports. He said he will do it again when lawmakers meet next week.

"I not only will vote no (on the compact), but I'll possibly employ tactics to slow down the consideration," Montigny told The New Bedford Standard-Times.

Montigny and other lawmakers from southeastern Massachusetts are worried that their region will remain in limbo while the tribe pursues its land-into-trust application. The process could take years and faces threats of litigation.
