Narragansett Tribe to continue lawsuit against gaming proposals

The Narragansett Tribe of Rhode Island will continue to fight ballot proposals to expand non-Indian gaming even though Chief Sachem Matthew Thomas acknowledged further appeals will most like be an "exercise in futility."

The tribe sued to block two questions on the November ballot to allow table games at two non-Indian gaming facilities. A judge ruled that the proposals likely don't violate the state constitution.

“I know of no other state, in the entire U.S., that is so blatantly discriminatory towards a federally recognized Indian tribe,” Thomas said in a statement, The Westerly Sun reported.

Voters have approved non-Indian gaming while rejected a casino for the tribe.
