Editorial: Community deserves shot at off-reservation casino

"Amid talk of this new casino push, it is important to remember the Bay Mills Indian Community still hopes to open a Port Huron casino. A casino the tribe opened in Vanderbilt was a test for the operation of casinos outside tribal lands. The Vanderbilt casino was quickly shut down. Its status and a potential Port Huron casino could be decided in federal court later this year.

If a new Michigan casino ever opens, though, by rights, its location should be Port Huron. The factors that opened three casinos in Detroit apply just as strongly to this city. Like Detroit, Port Huron is an international border city with a Canadian casino drawing Michigan tourists.

Port Huron’s leaders aren’t pinning their hopes on a casino. The uphill battle a casino demands wisely directed attention to more practical economic growth pursuits."
