Catawba Nation heads to court for casino on the reservation

The Catawba Nation of South Carolina is asking a judge for permission to open a temporary casino on the reservation.

Last month, the tribe sued the state to clarify its gaming rights. At issue is a state law that allows off-shore casinos.

The tribe says it is entitled to the same types of gaming. So the tribe wants to be able to operate a temporary casino while the lawsuit proceeds in the court system.

“There’s no gaming going on on the reservation at all. Right now we’re getting ready,” attorney Wally Fayssoux told The Rock Hill Herald.

The hearing takes place February 23, the paper said.
