Republican lawmakers say they will stop the Catawba Nation from opening a casino on the reservation.
Under its land claim settlement, the tribe follows the state's gaming laws. As a result, the tribe was forced to end video poker when the state outlawed the game.
But now that the state has authorized casino boats, the tribe believes it's entitled to the same. "The fact is, the government again broke its promises to the Indians," tribal member Ellen Bridges told The Rock Hill Herald.
Republican lawmakers who might otherwise support casino boats, however, don't think the tribe should get a casino. Sen. Wes Hayes (R) was among those who told the paper they will try to stop the tribe.
