Twentynine Palms Band sees opposition to casino proposal

The Twentynine Palms Band of Mission Indians saw significant opposition to its off-reservation casino proposal at a meeting in Joshua Tree, The Hi-Desert Star reports.

The tribe hosted an informational session with the community on October 15. Most of the response was negative.

"I see a lot of no stickers, and that's OK. It's going to take me some time to make you my friend," Chairman Darrell Mike said at the meeting, the paper reported. "I'm going to work on it."

Residents cited the rural nature of Joshua Tree, crime and gambling addiction as concerns. But others said they welcomed the prospect of jobs.
