James Ramos, the chairman of the San Manuel Band of Mission
Indians, plans to meet with leaders of the
Los Coyotes Band
of Cahuilla and Cupeno Indians to discuss off-reservation gaming.
Ramos and his tribe oppose the casino. They say the Los Coyotes Band has no ties to the Barstow area, which has traditionally been associated with the Chemehuevi Tribe.
But with Ramos running for a seat on the board of supervisors in San Bernardino County, he could end up representing Barstow. Local officials and the majority of people who spoke at a recent Bureau of Indian Affairs hearing support the casino.
Ramos plans to step down as chairman of his tribe if he is elected to the board.
