Los Coyotes Band lobbies governor on off-reservation casino plan

The Los Coyotes Band of Cahuilla and Cupeno Indians has been meeting with staff for California Gov. Jerry Brown (D) in hopes of gaining support for an off-reservation casino.

The tribe plans to build the casino in Barstow. That's more than 100 miles from the reservation.

The tribe needs to negotiate a Class III gaming compact with Brown. Under the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act, Brown also needs to approve the casino itself.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs will hold a public hearing next Wednesday, July 27, to discuss the environmental impact statement for the casino.
