Navajo Nation gaming official against proposed smoking ban

A proposed smoking ban will hurt business on the Navajo Nation, the tribe's top gaming executive said.

President Ben Shelly wants to ban smoking at the tribe's two casinos and at two facilities under construction. Navajo Nation Gaming Enterprise CEO Bob Winter says the proposal will drive customers away.

"We wouldn't mind it if the smoking ban applied to all casinos in New Mexico and Arizona, but it would affect only us," Winter told The Navajo Times.

Nearly every single tribal gaming facility in New Mexico and Arizona allows smoking, the paper said. Only one tribe has banned it.
