California tribes with casinos oppose new plans for casinos

Gaming tribes are urging California Gov. Jerry Brown (D) reject two new casinos in the state.

Brown has veto authority over the casinos sought by the Enterprise Rancheria and the North Fork Rancheria of Mono Indians. Other tribes are against the proposals.

"A tribe should not be permitted to acquire land for gaming anywhere it chooses within the state," the gaming tribes said in a letter to Brown, The Marysville/Yuba City Appeal-Democrat reported. "Substantial weight should be given to a tribe's historic connection to the land because to ignore a lack of connection would seriously undermine tribal sovereignty."

The Bureau of Indian Affairs is considering the two casinos under the two-part determination section of the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act
