A group called Citizens Against
Casino Expansion has gathered letters in opposition to the
Spokane Tribe off-reservation casino.
The group says 12 letters were sent to the Bureau of Indian Affairs to object to the proposal.
The letters were signed by 18 state and local leaders.
The BIA has yet to issue a draft environmental impact statement for the project. The tribe wants to build the casino on 145 acres near Airway Heights.
The tribe is proceeding under the two-part determination section of the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act. The casino will need federal and state approval.
In the history of IGRA, only three tribes have opened casinos under the
two-part determination section. One is located in Airway Heights -- owned by the
Kalispel Tribe.
