Judge sets hearing in Tohono O'odham off-reservation casino bid

A federal judge will hold a hearing next Thursday, February 17, in the Tohono O'odham Nation off-reservation casino casino.

The city of Glendale and the Gila River Indian Community are suing the Bureau of Indian Affairs. They say the agency shouldn't be able to take land in trust for the Tohono O'odham Nation.

The BIA hasn't determined whether gaming can occur on the land. The tribe plans to build a $550 million casino at the site.

The effort could falter if a new state law goes into effect before the land is placed in trust. The law would allow Glendale to annex the tribe's property without the tribe's consent.

Next week's hearing takes place before Judge David G. Campbell at the federal courthouse in Phoenix.
