Carl Arman, who served as assistant secretary of the Bureau of Indian Affairs during the final years of the Bush administration, says review of gaming land applications has become "a highly politicized process."
Artman said the BIA still hasn't made final decisions on five casinos that were in the queue during his tenure. So it might be some time before the Tohono O'odham Nation gets an answer on its controversial project even in the face of a lawsuit.
"It could take a very long time," Artman told The Arizona Republic.
The Gila River Indian
Community and the city of Glendale have filed suit to stop the BIA from taking 54 acres in trust for the Tohono O'odham Nation.
The BIA hasn't decide whether the land can be used for gaming.
