The city council in Nyssa, Oregon, said they will support an off-reservation casino for the Burns Paiute Tribe.
The tribe wants to open a gaming facility and pursue other development somewhere in Malheur County. A prior effort was held back during the Bush administration.
"We expect this will take quite some time," Diane Teeman, the chair of the tribe's development corporation, told the city council, The Ontario Argus Observer reported. "This is a lot of I’s that need to be dotted and a lot of T’s to be crossed."
It's not clear if the tribe has filed or refiled a land-into-trust application. Teeman indicated the tribe might ask Congress to place land in trust.
