The administrators of the Social Distance Powwow are hosting a discussion at 7:45pm Eastern on April 27, 2020, to hear from Native women and leaders of the missing and murdered Indigenous women movement.
The discussion comes after the popular group on Facebook held a celebratory broadcast with a Native writer who has been accused of sexual harassment on April 26, 2020. The administrators removed the archived video from their page following widespread complaints.
Stephanie Hebert (Mi’kmaq), a co-founder of the Social Distance Powwow, is scheduled to speak with Deborah Maytubee Denton of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women USA; Corrine Rice of the Buffalo Project and the Minnesota Indian Women’s Sexual Assault Coalition; Susan Stewart of the Fierce Woman Warrior Society; and author and journalist Jacqueline Keeler
“We hope that this will be a positive space to acknowledge the struggles that victims and their families face, from some of the front-line workers in this very sad and often tragic part of Native and non-native communities,” an announcement reads. “We ask that comments to this post and our live stream be mindful; remember that victims and their families are present with us in the SDP family, and we want to be supportive and mindful of them.”
