The Tribal Canoe Journeys, an annual cultural and spiritual gathering among tribes in the Pacific Northwest, has been delayed “until further notice” due to concerns about the coronavirus.

The trip draws participants from tribes in the U.S. and First Nations in Canada. The host community this year is the Snuneymuxw First Nation in British Columbia.

“Tribal Journeys is a celebration of our identity, culture and unifies our Nations all around the Pacific Northwest,” Chief Mike Wyse said in a news release. “We know how important it is for us at all times like this to continue to pass our culture, practices and traditions, but it is also our tradition to protect our people and ensure everyone is safe when a threat like this pandemic faces us.”
