54 new cases and one death related to COVID-19 reported

WINDOW ROCK, Arizona – On Saturday, the Navajo Department of Health, in coordination with the Navajo Epidemiology Center and the Navajo Area Indian Health Service, reported 54 new COVID-19 cases for the Navajo Nation and one death. The total number of deaths is now 1,589. A full report will be available on Monday.

On Saturday, the state of Arizona reported 8,220 new cases. The states of Utah and New Mexico will report case numbers on Monday.

“Happy New Year to all of our Diné people! We also thank all of our frontline warriors who work around the clock to help our people and save lives. As we begin the New Year, we must continue to adhere to the recommendations of our public health experts and do our best to encourage our loved ones to get fully vaccinated and a booster shot. The Omicron variant continues to spread across the country and the best defense against it is to get the vaccine and continue to take precautions. We are in this together,” said Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez.

Health care facilities across the Navajo Nation continue to administer COVID-19 vaccines. If you would like to receive one of the COVID-19 vaccines, please contact your health care provider and schedule an appointment.

“We pray and continue to pray for a safe, healthy, and prosperous New Year for all of our people. We pray that our people remain strong, continue to support each other, and to overcome this pandemic. Keep practicing the safety measures put forth by our health officials and continue to pray for all of our people, first responders, and our leaders,”said Vice President Myron Lizer.
