72 new cases, 36,896 recoveries, and nine more deaths related to COVID-19

WINDOW ROCK, Arizona – On Wednesday, the Navajo Department of Health, in coordination with the Navajo Epidemiology Center and the Navajo Area Indian Health Service, reported 72 new COVID-19 cases for the Navajo Nation and nine recent deaths. The total number of deaths is now 1,536. The report indicates that 36,896 individuals have recovered from COVID-19. 388,422 COVID-19 tests have been administered. The overall total number of positive COVID-19 cases is now 39,158, including six delayed reported cases.

Navajo Nation COVID-19 positive cases by Service Unit:

• Chinle Service Unit: 6,831
• Crownpoint Service Unit: 3,731
• Ft. Defiance Service Unit: 4,627
• Gallup Service Unit: 6,453
• Kayenta Service Unit: 3,343
• Shiprock Service Unit: 7,008
• Tuba City Service Unit: 4,822
• Winslow Service Unit: 2,321

* 22 residences with COVID-19 positive cases are not specific enough to place them accurately in a Service Unit.

On Wednesday, the state of Arizona reported 4,064 new cases, Utah reported 1,804 new cases, and the state of New Mexico reported 1,409 cases. 

“We wish everyone a safe and enjoyable Thanksgiving Day. For those families that are coming together for the Thanksgiving holiday, we strongly urge you to keep your guard up, wear masks if you’re near others who do not reside within the same household, minimize in-person gatherings, and practice social distancing. We have to be mindful that we are still in the midst of a public health emergency and there are still substantial risks associated with COVID-19. Please be safe, keep praying, and take precautions,” said Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez.

Health care facilities across the Navajo Nation continue to administer COVID-19 vaccines. If you would like to receive one of the COVID-19 vaccines, please contact your health care provider and schedule an appointment.

“Happy Thanksgiving to all of our Navajo people. Please remember our frontline warriors, those serving in the military, and all of our Navajo people this holiday. We encourage everyone to take precautions and be very careful. We continue to pray this holiday for our people and that we may overcome this pandemic soon,” said Vice President Myron Lizer.
