In a post on social media on March 27, 2020, Chairwoman Gwendena Lee-Gatewood of the White Mountain Apache Tribe announced the first death of one of its citizens.

Lee-Gatewood said the citizen did not live or work on the Fort Apache Reservation in Arizona. But she said the “reality of the virus is unfolding before our eyes.”

“Please adhere to guidelines and the ‘stay home’ requests, adhere to social distancing and do not have gatherings of 10 or more,” Lee-Gatewood wrote. “Wash your hands and consisten[t]ly wipe surfaces.”

“The entire reservation is closed, only Wood Cutting is open in designated areas. Do not go around barricades either,” she added.
