FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
August 14, 2021

62 new cases and two more deaths related to COVID-19 reported

WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. – On Saturday, the Navajo Department of Health, in coordination with the Navajo Epidemiology Center and the Navajo Area Indian Health Service, reported 62 new COVID-19 positive cases for the Navajo Nation and two more deaths. The total number of deaths is now 1,389.

On Saturday, the state of Arizona reported 3,418 new cases. The states of Utah and New Mexico will report their weekend case numbers on Monday.

“Please wear a mask in public and do your best to practice social distancing if you travel. The Delta variant continues to spread in our communities and among people during family and social gatherings. We appreciate businesses and other facilities taking precautions to keep our people safe. Please continue to wear masks and get fully vaccinated as soon as possible,” said Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez.

The Navajo Department of Health issued three new Public Health Emergency Orders this week, declaring “Orange Status” for businesses, schools, and revising in-person gathering limits for certain events in response to the recent increase in COVID-19 cases on the Navajo Nation. The new public health emergency orders will go into effect on Monday, August 16, 2021. The Navajo Nation’s mask mandate remains in effect. The public health emergency orders are available online at: https://www.ndoh.navajo-nsn.gov/COVID-19.

“Continue to mask up and to follow the protocols and guidance from our health care experts. We are seeing an increase in cases, but we know how to reduce the spread of COVID-19. It comes down to personal responsibility and getting fully vaccinated to protect ourselves and others. Please be safe and keep praying for our people,” said Vice President Myron Lizer.
