9 new cases, 29,518 recoveries, and no recent deaths related to COVID-19

WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. – On Thursday, the Navajo Department of Health, in coordination with the Navajo Epidemiology Center and the Navajo Area Indian Health Service, reported nine new COVID-19 positive cases for the Navajo Nation and no recent deaths. The total number of deaths remains 1,334 as previously reported. Reports indicate that 29,518 individuals have recovered from COVID-19. 276,904 COVID-19 tests have been administered. The total number of positive COVID-19 cases is now 30,906.

Navajo Nation COVID-19 positive cases by Service Unit:

• Chinle Service Unit: 5,612
• Crownpoint Service Unit: 2,971
• Ft. Defiance Service Unit: 3,671
• Gallup Service Unit: 4,903
• Kayenta Service Unit: 2,740
• Shiprock Service Unit: 5,247
• Tuba City Service Unit: 3,754
• Winslow Service Unit: 1,989

* 19 residences with COVID-19 positive cases are not specific enough to place them accurately in a Service Unit.

On Thursday, the state of Arizona reported 370 new cases, Utah reported 313, and New Mexico reported 103 cases. On Thursday, Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez and Navajo Area IHS Director Roselyn Tso visited the COVID-19 vaccination site at Northern Navajo Medical Center in Shiprock, N.M. to show their support and appreciation to the health care workers and local residents who received the vaccine. A report provided to President Nez during the visit indicates that 97-percent of elders over the age of 75, 71-percent of individuals over the age of 16, and 34-percent of adolescents between the ages of 12-15 have been fully vaccinated within the Shiprock Service Unit as of June 8. 

“Our health care workers are saving countless lives each and every day. I cannot thank all of our frontline warriors enough for their sacrifices and great service throughout the pandemic. Today, we got some great updates indicating that 97-percent of elders 75 years and older from the Shiprock Service Unit have been fully vaccinated. Community immunity across the entire Navajo Nation is our goal, but we need more and more of our people to get vaccinated to reach that next goal. As we continue to emerge from this pandemic, please continue to take precautions including wearing a mask in public,” said Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez.

Health care facilities across the Navajo Nation continue to administer COVID-19 vaccines during drive-thru events or by appointment. If you would like to receive the vaccine, please contact your health care provider for more information for your Service Unit. 

“We are seeing great progress in terms of vaccination rates and the low numbers of new infections reported daily, but we have plenty of work to do to recover from this pandemic. It has taken its toll on our people, physically and mentally, so we have to continue to support one another especially our youth and elders. Please continue to pray and take precautions to remain safe,” said Vice President Myron Lizer.
