SWO Tribal Council Statement On Vaccine Event
Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate, on the Lake Traverse Reservation will host FEMA for a two-day vaccination event to be held in Sisseton.
Sisseton SD, On Monday April 19th & 20th, The Tribe will be working with FEMA to conduct a mass vaccination event from 10 am-4pm at the Buffalo Lake Lanes/Dakota Connection parking lot.
This is a public event and all are welcome, regardless of IHS eligibility. Although first advertised, this event will not include access to the Johnson & Johnson vaccine due to the governmental halt in distribution. Our community members participating will be receiving either their first dose of the Moderna or the Pfizer vaccine, administered by on-site healthcare professionals with follow-up appointments made thru IHS for the second dose 4 weeks later.
We understand the hesitancy, but we would like to encourage everyone 18 and over to schedule their vaccinations or attend next week’s two-day event. This event will be a controlled environment where community members will be inoculated safely with close monitoring with nearby post observation, in case of any side effects or reactions. With multiple other benefits, being fully vaccinated includes not being required to quarantine but also opening the opportunity to safely assist others during their exposure and potential positive results.
During these hard times it’s important for us to remember to protect each other, and the best way to do so is to be fully vaccinated. Along with continuing to practice all recommended CDC measures and guidelines, vaccinations are the next step in returning to “normal”. We trust our members and community to make the right decisions regarding their health, but would also like to encourage everyone to do what they can collectively to protect the youth and other vulnerable members of the community.
Be safe Oyate, together we can stop the spread of Covid-19.
