The Pueblo of Laguna continues to see an increase in COVID-19 cases on the reservation in New Mexico, with elders among the most affected.

In a video update on November 24, 2020, Governor Wilfred Herrera confirmed a total of 308 positive diagnoses, with 17 new cases occurring in the last two days. Almost half of the cases — 141 cases, plus 6 being hospitalized — are considered “active,” he said.

Of the active cases, Herrera said 25 of them are connected to the Laguna Rainbow Center, the elder care facility on the reservation. That accounts for about 17 percent of the active caseload.

Additionally, nine people have died from the coronavirus within reservation borders, the governor said.

“It’s very sad that we have experienced these fatalities and I hope we don’t see many more or any more,” Herrera said.
