The Indian Health Service has updated its coronavirus testing data, showing results as of 11:59 pm Eastern on May 8, 2020.
According to the data, 55,181 tests have been administered within the IHS system. Of those, 5,171 have returned positive for COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus. The number represents an increase of nearly 3.8 percent from the 4,469 cases previously reported.
Overall, testing increased by 6.2 percent between May 7 and May 8, the data shows. It grew by about the same rate, 6.5 percent, between May 6 and May 7
Some regions of Indian Country are still lagging when it comes to testing. The Tucson Area, which serves nearly 27,000 Native Americans in southern Arizona, has barely registered significant growth in recent days.
Day-to-day testing in the region grew by less than 2 percent between May 7 and May 8, the data shows. Between May 4 and May 8, testing increased by just 7.75 percent.
Additionally, the Tucson Area has yet to report more than 1,000 administered tests. Every other region surpassed the milestone weeks ago.

Data are reported from IHS, tribal, and urban Indian organization facilities, though reporting by tribal and urban programs is voluntary. Data reflect cases reported to the IHS through 11:59 pm on May 8, 2020.
