In a somber video message, Governor Stephen Roe Lewis of the Gila River Indian Community announced the first COVID-19 death within the tribe.

According to a press release, the tribe said the Gila River citizen was a 53-year-old woman with “underlying health conditions.” She passed on after a “prolonged stay” in an intensive care unit.

“We are witnessing the reality of the COVID-19 outbreak,” Lewis said in the release. In the video, the governor reminded community residents to stay home and follow social distancing guidelines.

The Gila River Indian Community is located near Phoenix, Arizona. Lewis confirmed a total of 12 COVID-19 cases on the reservation in a video on April 3
