On March 26, 2020,  the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation confirmed the tribe’s first COVID-19 case  — which resulted in the  death of a non-tribal citizen on the reservation in Arizona.

According to a press release, the 46-year-old man had “underlying health conditions. He died “prior to the release of the test result,” the tribe said.

“Tribal and community members with close contacts of the deceased are taking recommended precautions of self-quarantine and self-monitoring for symptoms,” John Fedyna, the acting director of the Wassaja Memorial Health Center, said in the release.
