Although only one American Indian man was executed by a state government last year, more Natives are now on death row than ever, according to a Department of Justice study.

There are 29 American Indian inmates on death row as of last year, said the report. The figure is up from 25 in 1990.

Of thw 214 new additions to the death row, three were Indian men and one was an Indian woman.

During a 24-year period from 1977 to 2000, a total of 6 Native males have been executed in the states. Five were killed by lethal injection and one was through execution, stated the report.
