FRIDAY, DECEMBER 13, 2002

Welcome to In The Hoop, Indianz.Com's occasional column about assorted Indian issues.

In The Hoop: The Scorecard
Is it Friday already? That means it's time for the weekly list of the movers and shakers in Indian Country and beyond.

The Winners
Phil Hogen - Congratulations on your appointment. We know you'll do your job well, even when tribes and non-Indians complain.

Jean Maybee - Could it be that a secretary is the best witness ever in the trust fund case? A sad commentary on the Department of Interior but kudos for you.

OTR Employees - This shout out goes out to all our homies at the Office of Trust Fund Records!

Agua Caliente Tribe - Who pays $100,000 to meet their own trustee, and still doesn't get a meeting? You were actually going to go in the Losers column but you are actually a Winner for Stupidity.

The Losers
TIME reporter Donald L. Barlett - "Why would Indian tribes need to have high-powered lobbyists?" you asked yourself. And you won a Pulitzer Prize?

Indian Country Today - Instead of complaining about everyone else's coverage, we wish you'd do some of your own original reporting since you are the most "influential" Indian publication, according to your own PR.

William Safire - Oh please, like you're a reliable authority on Indian gaming. What if your friends, "The Kurds," wanted a casino?

Gale Norton - Even in the face of death, you are still a diva! No wire hangers!

In The Middle
Aurene Martin - Your stock was rising with the reorganization but it may fall with this deposition. We're sure some tribe will hire you if it happens.

Radmilla A. Cody - Will your pending imprisonment hurt your musical career? Among Indians, no! But don't count on the white people inviting you back.

Delphine Red Shirt - Just who gave you the authority to decide who is Indian? We just decided you aren't. So there.

Trent Lott - We don't care if you stay or go, you'll still be one big idiot. Then again, Washington, D.C., is full of them.
