In The Hoop
TUESDAY, DECEMBER 10, 2002 Welcome to In The Hoop, Indianz.Com's occasional column about assorted Indian issues. New Additions!
December 18 - By popular demand, we have included the following people and positions in the contest: Lee Fleming, Chief of Branch of Acknowledgment and Research (BAR); Nedra Darling, Director of Public Affairs; and Jackie Cheek, Director of Congressional Affairs. A Reorganization Contest
Now that the first member of the Bush Cabinet has resigned, In The Hoop is running its own contest! The five readers who correctly guesses which high-level Bureau of Indian Affairs manager will leave as a result of the pending reorganization and comes closest to the departure date will receive a lovely gift from the folks at AllNative, our sister e-commerce site. There are a some requirements, though. The only positions covered are senior managers in the central Washington, D.C., office are the 12 BIA regional directors. This means people like Robert Ecoffey, director of the Office of Law Enforcement, or George Skibine, director of the Office of Indian Gaming Management. This doesn't mean BIA employee #5213 over in Anadarko or some random superintendent. The Office of Special Trustee (OST) also doesn't count because everyone is out the door there. (Kidding.) Also, the person has to be forced out, retire, resign or otherwise leave the BIA. Those coveted "reassignments" to some do-nothing office or "details" to The Hill don't count. (You know who you are.) To give you some help, the following positions are covered: Deputy Assistant Secretary (Aurene Martin)
Deputy Assistant Secretary for Management (Jim McDivitt)
Deputy Commissioner (Terry Virden, acting)
Office of Indian Education Program (Bill Mehojah)
Office of Tribal Services (Mike Smith)
Office of Trust Responsibilities (Virden)
Office of Law Enforcement (Robert Ecoffey)
Office of Indian Gaming Management (George Skibine)
Office of Economic Development (George Gover)
Office of American Indian Trust (Jim Pace)
Office of Self Governance (Bill Sinclair)
Indian Arts and Crafts Board (Meredith Stanton)
Office of Facilities Management and Construction (Bill Collier)
Office of Administration (Deborah Maddox)
Office of Planning, Budget and Management Support
Office of Audit and Evaluation
All Regional Directors (12) You can also win a prize if you are the first to inform us of a departure and we are able to confirm it. So there it is! Everyone is eligible except the person holding the position, although spouses, family members and enemies can apply. E-mail us below and make sure you leave your name so we can get back to you when the time comes around. In Your Hoop
