The proposed takeover of the National Bison Range by the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes of Montana would set a precedent nationwide.

Under the 1994 amendments to the Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act, tribes can enter into self-governance compacts with the Department of Interior to manage federal properties that have cultural significance. No tribe has yet to read such an agreement, and the Salish and Kootenai, if successful, would be the first.

The range is located entirely within the Flathead Reservation borders.
