The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is moving forward with plans to have the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes manage the National Bison Range in Montana.

The agency held a public hearing in Montana last week but an official said nothing dissuades the government from changing its mind. Paul Hoffman, a deputy assistant secretary, said the tribes have a right, under the Indian Self-Determination Act, to manage resources they have cultural and historic ties to.

Hoffman said the tribes will be able to adopt an Indian preference policy in managing the range.
