In nearly three years, the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina has grown from a non-profit organization with $33,000 in the bank to a fully functioning government with a $10 million budget.

The 23-member tribal council was created in November 2000 to replace the non-profit and to administer the state and federal grants the tribe receives. The council has started several initiatives, including an $8 million housing program.

Chairman Leon Hunt is scheduled to present a "State of the Tribe" address on July 1.
