Author / poet / standup comedian Sherman Alexie is working on a biography of guitar legend and alleged Cherokee Jimi Hendrix, The Oregonian reports.

"It's a different kind of book -- they only want about 75,000 words," he said of publisher HarperCollins. "It's a challenge."

Another Alexie project in the works is "Inventing My Grandfather," a memoir about his father and grandfather, who died fighting in World War II. He was surprised with some of his grandfather's military medals on an episode of the Oprah Winfrey show.

Alexie is currently promoting his book of short stories, "Ten Little Indians."
