A Native leader in Saskatchewan, Canada, has been charged with a hate crime for making anti-Semitic comments.

David Ahenakew, a former head of the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations and former chief of the Assembly of First Nations, said the genocide of Jewish people during the Holocaust was justified. He also praised Hitler, according to a reporter who spoke with him.

Ahenakew apologized for his remarks but the Saskatchewan Justice Department charged him under a federal law.
