Chad Smith was re-elected principal chief of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, the second-largest tribe in the United States.

Smith received about 52 percent of votes cast, according to news accounts. He defeated three others, including former chief Joe Byrd, who had 39 percent of the vote.

Smith told The Native American Times that he wants to focus on "retaining our language, developing jobs and helping to build a strong Cherokee community."
